Clontarf Hospital is the largest rehabilitation hospital in Ireland, with a total bed capacity of 160 beds. Referrals are accepted from across three hospital groups, with the majority of patients referred from our local acute hospitals, i.e. the Mater Misericordia University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital.

Patients wishing to be admitted to Clontarf Hospital must be referred by a Consultant in another hospital. Referrals are not accepted from General Practitioners or public.
There are two main categories of admissions to Clontarf Hospital:
The Orthopaedic rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme for patients who are fit for discharge from acute care but require an additional period of multidisciplinary inpatient care to maximise the patient’s full rehabilitation potential and independence. Patient can be expected to be admitted for a period of between 2 – 6 weeks rehabilitation depending on their requirements.
The ARU service is for patients aged 65 and over referred from Beaumont Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH). All patients referred to Clontarf Hospital are reviewed by a Consultant Geriatrician in Beaumont or MMUH prior to transfer to ensure they are medically fit, assistance of one person and able to engage in rehabilitation.
The Multidisciplinary team set rehabilitation goals and map progress for each patient. These goals are made with the patient’s involvement. Discharge planning is an essential element of the rehabilitation process and will commence upon admission, a provisional discharge date will be determined following the first multidisciplinary meeting. Family meetings will be organised when needed. When necessary a home visit is conducted to assess a patient’s home environment so as to assist a safe discharge.
