OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Description of service
The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life (WFOT 2005). Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation.

Location and details of department
The department is located in the outpatient department
of the hospital alongside our colleagues in social work
and physiotherapy departments. The department contains an assessment kitchen, bedroom and bathroom where assessment and training of activities of daily living can
take place.
Referrals are received from
- Member of multidisciplinary team member in IOH
- Occupational therapist in referring hospitals,
e.g. Cappagh, Mater, Beaumont.
Some common interventions can include
- Assessment of functional difficulties,
e.g. washing and dressing. - Seating and pressure care.
- Patient and carer education, e.g. falls prevention.
- Provision of small aids to maximise independence.
- Assessment of cognition.
- Home assessment to identify aids or adaptations at home to optimize independence and safety by compensating for physical and/or cognitive deficits.
- Discharge planning.
- Referral to appropriate community services.
